The Japanese writing system is composed of two phonetic syllabaries called hiragana and katakana, and thousands of characters adopted from Chinese called kanji. There are 46 basic characters in hiragana and katakana, but there are over 100 variations of the 46 basic characters in the complete syllabaries. It is necessary to know about 2000 kanji to read the daily newspaper.

QuickScholar Software is dedicated to providing the finest quality Japanese learning programs for PCs running Windows 95, 98, 3.1, NT, 2000 and XP.

An emphasis of all QuickScholar Software products is teaching the Japanese character sets. Each product is based on the best scholarship, works well with relatively simple equipment, and is very affordable. The user can learn over ten thousand Japanese words and phrases.

QuickScholar Software stresses three themes: Practice, practice, practice; learning should be easy and fun; if the user makes a mistake, extra practice should be given on the mistaken item.

Reading & Writing Kana

Learn to read and write the two Japanese phonetic syllabaries: hiragana and katakana. This software keeps a separate record of your progress for each syllabary. Pronunciation is taught using the voice of a native Japanese speaker and the program "watches" as you draw the kana, helping you when you make a mistake.

Kana Word Puzzles

Kana Word Puzzles is a vocabulary-building program. It teaches over 2000 Japanese words, reinforces familiarity with hiragana and katakana, and provides hours of fun and linguistic growth.

Kana Concentration

Kana Concentration is much like the classic concentration game except that a kana is hidden beneath each square on the board. Play the game

using hiragana only, katakana only, or hiragana and katakana combined.

Kana Word Search

Kana Word Search is much like the classic word search game except that all the words hidden in the puzzle are written in hiragana or katakana. Designed with all skill levels in mind, the game provides optional hints that support the newest student. Hear the words spoken by a native Japanese speaker.

Kana Speed Recognition

Kana Speed-Recognition is the most challenging of these games. This game displays eight pairs of characters, and in each pair, one is a hiragana and one is a katakana. You specify whether the two represent the same sound or not. At first, set the time limit so that you can comfortably give your answers with accuracy. Then, set increasingly challenging time limits so that eventually you are reading kana at breathtaking speed!
